For 40 years, Gap has been a staple in the clothing industry. According to the company’s founder, Don Fisher, on the Gap’s corporate website, GapInc.com, “I created Gap with a simple idea: to make it easier to find a pair of jeans. We remain committed to that basic principle.”

To this day, Fisher’s aspirations still ring true. With over 3,100 stores operating throughout the world, Gap is one of the world’s most profitable and recognizable specialty clothing retailers (Gap Inc.com).

In recent years, the profitability of Gap Inc. has only been growing. Gap Inc.’s flagship store, Gap, has been a lucrative business venture ever since its first store opened its doors in San Francisco, California back in 1969.

Within the following years, Gap Inc. only continued to expand its business at a steadily. In 1983, the company acquired the rights to the then two-store travel and expedition clothing outlet, Banana Republic.

In 1990, Gap began to appeal to a more adolescent crowd with the opening of their first GapKids store in San Francisco, Calif. With the inclusion of their babyGap line, their business now reached a then untouched demographic for the company; infants and children.

Fisher’s already booming business only began to grow dramatically when they opened their first Old Navy location in Colma, Calif. In 1994.

With the additions of Banana Republic and Old Navy, coupled with the company’s foundational business, Gap, along with their two other brands, Piperlime, an online shop for shoes and handbags, and Athleta, a women’s store catering towards a more athletic style, Gap Inc. has a broad appeal towards every type of consumer. Gap, the company’s landmark brand, petitions towards average consumer. Gap designed to be a store offering moderate clothing with a fashionable style, at an affordable price.

Banana Republic is the company’s luxury brand that offers high-end clothing for adults. Banana Republic’s desired demographic is a more sophisticated, upscale customer.

Old Navy is Gap Inc.’s more accessible chain. It has been Old Navy’s goal ever since its opening in 1994 to design stylish, inexpensive clothes, geared towards the average blue-collar consumer. Old Navy offers clothes for adults, children and the whole family.

Gap also offers its credit card, the GapCard, a great idea for its frequent customers. The GapCard is an easy, accessible credit card, bundled with rewards and other benefits. With Gap’s rewards program, the cardholder will receive a $10 reward card for every 1,000 earned. One reward point will be earned with every $1 spent with the credit card wherever Visa credit cards are accepted. Better yet, five reward points will be earned per every $1 spent at not only Gap, but Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime and Athleta as well.

GapCard members are awarded with handfuls of benefits from Gap, Inc. Welcoming their cardholders, new customers will receive 15% off their first purchase with their GapCard. Additionally, cardholders will receive free shipping on any online order of $100 or higher, be notified about exclusive offers and promotions, rewarded with special birthday savings and given the opportunity to save an additional 10% on any purchase every Tuesday at Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Pipelime.

If you spend at least $800 at any Gap, Inc. location within a calendar year, you will have the option of being upgraded to Gap Silver, the next level of GapCards, that includes more rewards. The Silver rewards include free shipping on all online purchases, 15% off a “Choose Your Own Sale Day” offer where the cardholder can choose one day out of the year to take an additional 15% off any purchase, and “Silver only offers” like triple points days.

To be entitled to Gap Silver status, the cardholder is required to spend at least $800 every calendar year at any Gap, Inc. location
